Late Thursday afternoon, the U. S. Congress finally took their first step to enacting real labor law reform. After months of organizing, debating, pressing, writing, calling and perservering You have won a major battle for workers and our union! The EmploFeeyee Free Choice Act (EFCA) is now on its way to the U.S. Senate and workers are one step closer to being able to organize without being put through months of illegal intimidation, threats, reassignments and firings. They are also one step closer to being guaranteed a first contract if they determine they want a union.Your hard work, leadership and determination withstood an onslaught from corporate America and President Bush’s last minute promise of a veto. You stood firm all through the last congress when the anti-union leadership would not even hold a hearing on EFCA, much less allow it to be voted on. Rapid Response led the way in this fight and you should be extremely proud of your efforts. Final vote listing is below.

This fight now moves to the U.S. Senate and it will be a long, brutal battle there as well. Also, with th’ê president’s promise to veto the bill, we have to make sure we get support from as many senators as possible. Keep watching Rapid Response for more information and keep calling your senators if they are not signed onto the bill yet as a co-sponsor. You can still reach your U.S. senators by calling 1-866-340-9279.

                                         MERRY CHRISTMAS

Rapid Response is a steelworker non-partisan communication and action program that involves and affects every steelworker. Through communication using faxes and e-mails, We can respond in a short period of time to any given subject. Rapid Response will respond whether it is pending legislation concerning labor, or any other work related issues of concern to our union brothers and sisters and their families.
We are a network of communication that starts at the International level. From there, communications are sent to the District and then to the local union level. We receive our information from District coordinators. The District coordinators are directly involved with the International and local unions. The District coordinators are the main link that drives the Rapid Response network.
Rapid Response has three basic action alert information calls in the network. The first is known as an info-alert. Info-alerts are used to inform members of relevant issues and legislation pertaining to every steelworker and their families. These alerts are then distributed or posted on the mill floor bulletin boards.
The second form of communication through Rapid Response is called action-call. In this form of communication, the Rapid Response Team may be asked to make phone calls. We may also be asked to start a write-in campaign used to inform our legislators of our position on upcoming or pending legislations. We would also request their support on these issues. Sometimes, action calls request our attendance at various rallies to show our support.
The last phase is a feedback report. This happens when any action is complete. The report explains the results of the action. Included in the report is information on how our legislators responded and voted on the various issues which pertained to the steelworkers and other brother unions. It is important that we support labor friendly and steel friendly legislators for the company as well as the union.
Rapid Response, through inclusion builds a strong local union. Strong unions are more able to negotiate good contracts. The more union members that are active in the legislative process, the stronger the local and international union becomes. As a result, we will be able to strengthen labor laws. This will ensure that the union and company are strong, now and in the future.
As your local Rapid Response Committee, we will report on issues and legislation which pertains to the membership.

                                                                 Thank you,
